Just like you, we’ve been saving up our pennies, and today we decided to put some of our savings toward helping someone on Kiva.

Kiva is a website that connects people through lending in hopes of alleviating poverty.  They work with microfinance institutions around the world to provide loans to budding entrepreneurs.  Kiva doesn’t charge interest to to its Field Partners, nor does it provide interest to lenders.  However, Field Partners are free to charge interest, but Kiva will not partner with an organization that charges exorbitant interest rates. Kiva also requires Field Partners to fully disclose their interest rates, so their practices are very transparent.  As an organisation, Kiva eliminates barriers to accessing capital – a helpful thing for people in developing countries who are trying to start their own businesses and become self-sufficient.

Meet Diana

Through Kiva, heaps! partially funded a loan for Diana Cañas, a 37 year old mother of three from Bogotá, Colombia.  Diana started her own business by making clothing in her tiny apartment.  While competing against local workshops, she has managed to grow capital and expand her business to dominate the neighborhood market.  Thanks to her persistence and hard work, she currently owns 5 semi-industrial sewing machines.

This loan will help her purchase a fully industrial sewing machine to improve the quality of her products and reduce production time.  Diana’s dream is to expand her workshop and offer a greater variety of pieces that will catch the attention of new customers in other regions of Colombia.

As a company that strives to help people achieve their goals, we at heaps! wish Diana all the best in her entrepreneurial endeavours.

We are thrilled to announce that heaps! has won not one, but TWO Telecommunications Users Association of New Zealand (TUANZ) Innovations Awards! Held in Auckland, this prestigious annual award ceremony recognises outstanding innovations within the telecommunication arena in New Zealand.

Nominated as a finalist for three categories (Education, Commerce, and Innovation), heaps! walked away with both the Education and Commerce Awards.

In evaluating finalists for the TUANZ Commerce Award, the judges were looking for the most innovative financial product, service, or initiative developed in New Zealand and delivered electronically to New Zealanders to enhance the customer’s experience. The finalists for this category were a diverse group with very different value propositions, and heaps! was the winner in the end.  The judges commented that heaps! “goes beyond counting your money because it changes consumer behaviour. With Kiwibank behind them, heaps! also has huge export potential.”

The TUANZ Education Award (sponsored by Aurecon) was given to the business with the most innovative education or training product, service, or initiative developed in New Zealand, delivered electronically to New Zealanders. The judges recognised heaps! as a product that contributes to general education (applicable to whole life learning, e.g business, community, primary, secondary, tertiary, etc). They commented that “heaps! overcomes a gap in the provision of financial literacy. heaps! also has a wide application to all New Zealanders with a bank account and not only will it help solve New Zealand financial literacy problems, it also has the potential to grow the New Zealand economy.”

We’re incredibly honored to be recognised by TUANZ, and we humbly thank our customers and Kiwibank for their support.

Greer McDonald has been shopping around for a new bank that will help her get out of debt.  On her stuff.co.nz blog, she openly talks about her experiences with  Westpac, ASB, and Kiwibank, and gives glimpses into services offered by SBS, National Bank, BNZ, and ANZ.

Partly thanks to heaps!, Greer McDonald has decided to move her daily personal banking to Kiwibank.

The Heaps! product is an added bonus and I think it’ll prove to be a pretty valuable tool in the future.”

We wish Greer all the best in her financial future, and she can bet heaps! will be there to help!

Lady in the Red Sizes Up Heaps

Greer McDonald has tried several personal finance software websites and writes about how heaps! speaks to the inner geek and financial infant in her.  A product of her Generation “Y-Not” spending habits, Greer’s debt brings new meaning to a misspent youth. Her aim now is to debunk money myths and get Kiwis to take control of their finances by learning through her bad choices.

3 Key Things Greer Finds in heaps!

  1. “It’s not just a retrospective tool that tells you what you’ve spent after the fact, it breaks things down to show information like how many days till your next pay day (and whether you’re on-track right now with your budget, rather than later).”
  2. “It also does things like celebrate spend-free days by marking them on your breakdown.”
  3. “Your goals stare you in the face on the same page as your balance (like) and I think my favourite thing: it doesn’t look like it’s a bank site.”
