I totally agree with about the difference in spending when you take a calculator. I did that at the start of the year and it was so helpful, i noticed the difference whenever i didnt take my calculator.

The different idea about taking more than you need out for living costs and then saving them is a really good idea and i had never thought to do that. I was getting the maximum living costs and the amount i earnt from my part time job and had a habit of spending it on things i didnt really need. Saving and repaying would have been a much better option.

Keep up with the awsome advice :)

Hi there!

What bank are you with? You should be able to log into your internet banking and download your transactions from there in multiple different formats - no software required.

Also, if you have any questions, issues, or suggestions please feel free to email support@heaps.co.nz at any time and they will get back to you very quickly on anything like this, cheers! :)

now with stocks the only sure way to make money is investing in gold and other precious metals like silver. I dumped all my stocks so that I may make money off of gold. I hope to be rich soon. The precious metal market is looking good. The dollar keeps declining. Great work on your post.

Stepping in rather late here....
I agree with the general sentiment.

This is a very interesting decision that Heaps has made to not allow users to set their own categories. It's the only budgeting system I have come across that has made that decision. And that's a telling sign - in every other system it's an essential tool. It's no different with Heaps, and makes it useless without. It's a case of close but no cigar.

Continuing to add more and more categories for people is an exercise in futility. You will never be able to finally come to a "one size fits all" category taxonomy that everyone will be able to use. People's lives/spending/income/habits are so incredibly different you will just end up with what you have now - one size fits some people well enough, the rest leave. Your feedback forums, as well as these blog comments make it pretty obvious.

I also think you are confusing the point of tagging. Tagging is a folkonomy, and a very different thing, with a very different purpose to a budget categorisation system, which a taxonomy. A taxonomy is a fixed and structured framework - exactly what you need for a budget. A folksonomy is ad-hoc and can be anything at any time - which is great for the examples you've talked about but NOT for replacing custom categories in a budget.

It's really disappointing to see you've made the decision to not have custom categories. When it was mentioned in the feedback forums last year that it was planned I was very excited and hanging out for it.

In short - a budget that I can't control is not a budget. It's a glorified bank statement.

Amen to that ! Easy ways to save money :) I'm a huge fan of diluting Juices, try Mizone rapid too! My friends sat they can't stand diluted juice, but probably won't even give it a chance. Good thinking Alicia.

Thanks for sharing this with me! It seems that many people preparing for marriage are so excited about the wedding that they forget to prepare for MARRIAGE - and especially the financial aspect of it. Financial problems are the leading cause, by far, of a broken marriage.

This list of questions is perfect!
